Once in a while Edgar Allen Poe’s “Raven” will caw as you walk on by. People
have tried to explain the enduring popularity of this poem. Here’s one
example:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/arts-and-entertainment/wp/2014/10/30/why-we-quoth-the-raven-evermore/
I’m agnostic on that subject. To me the poem is, “Quoth the Raven…” That’s
it. What I’m interested in is “quoth." Enter that into a search engine and
you get stuff about ancient roots of the word and then…Edgar Allen Poe.
So what do you know of the in-between period? Is there a whole lot of quothing
I don’t know about, or was Poe a Resurrection Man, raising the word from the
dead?
