When we are unsettled by some knowledge or presence we can wittingly or
unwittingly violate social norms. In so far as we cross the boundary of
acceptable conduct knowingly we are purposefully putting ourselves in a
position where we may reasonably expect social repercussions. In the case
of violations made in ignorance we enter the domain of the Freudian
unconscious. To Sigmund Freud what we refer to as reason by inference
served merely as a thin veneer of rationality, covering over hidden
desires, urges, memories, inhibitions, etc. In terms cherished by your
frenemy, thinking is something we undertake at our peril: we are most
ourselves when we do not think (to think).
