The ubiquity of the chain saw in North America today is amply illustrated by a
recommendation by Dr Alex Shigo, renowned plant pathologist (now deceased,
formerly with the United States Forest Service) to those who wish to learn more
about arboreal pathology..
He suggests in one of his books that when on a walk in the woods one should
always take along her or his chain saw, and dissect any fallen trees one comes
across to get a closer look at the internal damage caused by various fungi.
To me this was an ample illustration of one of the many differences between
going for a walk in the woods in North America and doing the same in Europe,
and my quoting of Shigo’s recommendation at one of the annual winter seminars
of the German Dendrological Association was greeted with a mixture of
incredulity, dismay — and outright laughter.
