Police noir. Gangster noir. Cops and Robbers very naughty. The Boston mob vs. the police in a cat-and-mouse hunt for infiltration of each other. This is Scorsese at his best, so nothing goes according to Hollywood expectations. No good guys and happy endings.

Leonardo DiCaprio does an amazing performance as an Irish street hoodlum. He is becoming the most important actor of this decade.

Not to JUST chime in with a "yeah, what he said!" but I wholeheartedly agree. I see about 100 films a year and "The Departed" was in my top 5 of 2006 for sure -- especially Jack Nicholson's toned down version of himself -- he should get best supporting actor nod for this. I hate Leo in "growing pains" , I hated him even more in "what's eating gilbert grape", but with "Catch Me If You Can", "The Departed" and "Blood Diamond", I'm on Leo's side.
