I forgot to mention that ground beef is a major potential source for an
especially virulent strain of E. coli. Ground is the worst because grinding
the meat into pieces increases the surface area for the bacteria and works it
all through the meat. Cutting boards, dishes and utensils that touch raw meat
are a potential problem too. Apple juice is also a source of E. coli if it's
not pasteurized. Hand washing with regular soap is recommended after handling
raw meat.
