Narcotics are funding the Taliban and the al Qaeda elements in Afghanistan.
It's more than just a moral issue.
Opium production in Afghanistan, which provides more than 90% of the world's
heroin, broke all records in 2006, reaching a historic high despite ongoing
U.S.-sponsored eradication efforts.
-- 26% production increase over past year -- for a total of 5,644 metric tons
-- 61% increase in the amount of land for cultivation of opium poppies
-- 132% increase in cultivation in the two main production provinces, Helmand
and Oruzgan
-- 33% of the country's gross domestic product is narcotics production
