I guess the ancient Greeks were always permitted to lie. Thucydides is chocked full of passages like:

"Come out of the Temple of Athena and we will not slay you," said Pseudos Mendex Malakoi.
And so the Bosanova hoplites came out of the temple, and the Tangoite soldiers slew them.
