This morning I wrote (quoting from Walt Whitman’s “To Foreign Lands”):
"I heard that you ask'd for something to prove this puzzle, the New World,
And to define America, her athletic Democracy;
Therefore I send you my poems, that you behold in them what you wanted.”
This afternoon I read (in today’s HARPER’S WEEKLY REVIEW):
"A former prison in Philadelphia that has served as a horror-movie set was
being prepared as a detention center for protesters arrested at the upcoming
Democratic National Convention, and presumptive Republican presidential nominee
Donald Trump fired his campaign manager. ‘Ding dong the witch is dead,’ tweeted
a Trump adviser, shortly before resigning.”
Okay, Walt, do your stuff.
“…
What deepening twilight! scum floating atop of the waters!
Who are they, as bats and night-dogs, askant in the Capitol?
What a filthy Presidentiad! (O south, your torrid suns! O north, your arctic
freezings!)
Are those really Congressmen? are those the great Judges? is that the President?
Then I will sleep awhile yet—for I see that These States sleep, for reasons;
(With gathering murk—with muttering thunder and lambent shoots, we all duly
awake,
South, north, east, west, inland and seaboard, we will surely awake.)”
Chris Bruce,
not sure it’s what I wanted that I’m beholding,
but mightily impressed by Whitman’s insight, in
Kiel, Germany
