There are many ways to experience Poland: it is possible to travel
comfortably, or more adventurously, by train, car, boat, plane, or by way
of active mobility, i.e. walking, bicycling, possibly also windsurfing and
kiting. Along your way you are likely to meet many friendly, and some
moderately courteous persons. Some of these will want to know if you are
famous; others simply don't care.
In 1999 Göran Tunström published his last novel, Famous Men who've Visited
Sunne. Tunström was born and raised in Sunne, a small village in his native
Sweden, and this town figures in many of his most widely read novels. Among
the characters in this book are the homophonic Edwin Orlan, a famous
astronomer who has arrived in Sunne to scatter his mom's ashes; the
colourful artist Harald Pihlgren; and an ageing priest who has begun to
harbour serious doubts concerning his nominal faith. What they share is
that they will all feature in the coloumn "Famous Men who've Visited Sunne"
by Stellan Jonsson. On the occasion of the town's 700 year celebration the
local newspaper has commissioned Jonsson to write a regular coloumn, since
Jonsson is himself widely known in the small community. A long time ago
Jonsson owned and ran the only grocery store in Sunne. Now the store is
closed, and Jonsson is ageing and frail. The commission gives him occasion
to revisit his life and his love, and the many famous men he've met that
have visited Sunne, Tunström's home town.
Göran Tunström was born in 1937, and passed away in 2000, leaving behind
the unfinished Attempt to Describe a Century. He's translated to many
languages, and continues to figure as one of his native Sweden's most
cherished authors.
