On the other hand, I wonder if the 'Soviet empire' had that much chances to 
begin with. Russia was a poor country and drained by war when the Soviets took 
over. Later on, there was an economic blockade by the West, then the attack by 
Hitler, then again the economic blockade and a costly nuclear arms race etc. If 
the Soviet Empire was an experiment to test Communism, it wasn't exactly 
performed under the most favorable of circumstances.
