A Brazilian friend tells me that the residue of processing
sugar cane to make ethanol is particularly noxious, Brazil
hasn't figured out how to deal with the environmental
consequences of this sludge byproduct, which has already
killed parts of several rivers. There were some promising
but ill-fated attempts to make fertilizer of the sludge, but
that simply concentrates the biotoxins. In short, the
ethanol solution is not a panacea.
