So who won the Israeli/Hezbollah war?

Let's see: Israel's goal was to smash Hezbollah and recover their two soldiers. Did they achieve those goals? No. Hezbollah is more significant than ever and the two soldiers are still in Hezbollah's hands.

What about Hezbollah? A bunch of guerillas fought off a far more powerful military to a standstill. Hezbollah now has 90% support in the Lebanon and, with the Lebanese state pretty much devastated, Hezbollah's position is stronger.

And what about the USA, which started this whole thing as a pre-war for the US attack on Iran? The US goal was to dislodge Hezbollah as a threat to Israel and strenghten the US position in the Middle East. The result: the US Secretary of State got thrown out of Lebanon. Instead of the US as the outside third party that can force a peace, the US is now seen as the instigator of a pointless war that killed nearly 1,000 people and destroyed Lebanon, the only democracy in the Middle East. The Arab states see that the US was unable to prevail in Lebanon, and thus the US military is yet weaker in the Middle East.

What did the US military learn from Lebanon in order to attack Iran? If the Israeli Army can't clearly defeat irregular guerillas, just exactly how is the US Army going to defeat Iran, which has a very large army? But one can't say that Bush has ever learned anything from his experiences, so it's looking pretty dismal for the next war.

What about Iran? They got attention shifted away from the nuclear reactors. They got Israel to look bad in world opinion.

So who won? It seems to me that Bush and Israel invaded Lebanon to destroy Hezbollah and after a month of free range fire, where they destroyed the Lebanese state, they were unable to do that.

Lawrence will say this is proof that I support Hezbollah because I'm a lesbian vegetarian (he got nowhere with liberal, leftist, or anarchist). No, Lawrence. I think the leaders of all four sides in this pointless war are warmongers who use war to get political power and to make more money. I'm cynical and a realist.

yrs,
andreas
