In the country's central highlands, thousands have joined a parade in Buon Ma Thuot. In pictures: anniversary parade The town's capture marked a turning point for the North Vietnamese forces, who took the southern capital less than two months later, in April 1975. The battle for Buon Ma Thuot was the beginning of the end for the South Vietnamese and the American troops who supported them. Following their hard-fought victory in the Central Highlands, North Vietnamese forces were able to build a string of successes, taking Hue, Danang, and eventually, on 30 April, Saigon - now known as Ho Chi Minh City. The legacy of the revolutionary leader was remembered at Wednesday's parade in the town as 30 elephants and thousands of military and police, townspeople and veterans, filed by his statue. One soldier recalled the battle as "very fierce". A commander said the southern soldiers had been unprepared; that they had been expecting the northern army to strike elsewhere. The government marks the end of the American War, as it is known in Vietnam, every five years - a helpful reminder for Hanoi of the Communist Party's greatest victory. The conflict is thought to have cost as many as three million Vietnamese their lives. In the cemetery of Buon Ma Thuot, elderly veterans lit joss sticks to remember their fallen comrades. The commemorations will follow the path taken by North Vietnamese troops 30 years ago, with parades planned to mark key battles in Hue, Danang and Nha Trang, before culminating in Ho Chi Minh City at the end of April [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------ Yahoo!
