Email to a friend=20 b.. Printer format=20 c..=20=20 d..=20=20 The US federal agency that operates the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre is b= eing sued by Indian Ocean tsunami survivors and relatives of victims. The suit alleges the centre and other defendants did not do enough to prote= ct people from the December 26 tsunami, which killed as many as 300,000 peo= ple throughout southern Asia. The lawsuit does not seek damages, but instead asks the court to preserve e= vidence for the plaintiffs so they can decide whether to pursue damages, a = lawyer said. "At least they should have the option to know what is going on," said Edwar= d Fagan, the US lawyer for the plaintiffs group, which includes at least 58= European survivors and family members of people killed in the disaster. The lawsuit claims the Thai government is destroying and concealing evidenc= e that will prove its officials knew of the approaching tsunami but chose n= ot to issue a warning fearing its effect on the country's tourism industry.= The suit was filed last week in US District Court for the Southern Distric= t of New York. Named as defendants are the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrat= ion (NOAA), Thailand's government, its Meteorological Department and the Ac= cor group, the French owner of the Sofitel hotel chain, which owns a beachf= ront tourist hotel in Phuket, Thailand. NOAA's Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre monitors seismic and ocean conditions= in the Pacific Basin and issues warnings to member nations. The Thai Meteo= rological Department is the country's weather forecasting agency. The Ewa Beach centre has been criticised for not being more aggressive abou= t warning southern Asian nations after they were alerted that a 9.0-magnitu= de earthquake occurred off Indonesia. NOAA officials refused comment on the lawsuit, but they previously defended= the centre by saying it was not set up to warn nations outside the Pacific= Rim about potential tsunamis. =A9 2005 AP Brought to you by=20=20 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------ Yahoo!
