KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono did not ask for an
extension of the amnesty period for illegal immigrants in his letter to Datuk
Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The Prime Minister said the letter instead extended Susilo's appreciation to
Malaysia for its cooperation, especially in areas related to Indonesian
workers.

"He wants both sides to be informed if there were any problems in confronting
the illegal immigrants situation.

"This is so we can think of what would be the best solution and not let illegal
immigrants bring problems to the two-way cooperation between Malaysia and
Indonesia," Abdullah said yesterday after launching the National Craft Day
2005.

Susilo had sent Abdullah a letter, which was delivered by the republic's
Manpower and Transmigration Minister, Fahmi Idris, to Deputy Prime Minister
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Saturday.

When asked whether he had any advice for the enforcement officers, who would be
involved in operations against illegal immigrants, Abdullah said: "There is no
need for advice. They know their duties and will do it well. They will follow
the guidelines and rules.

"Pandai-pandailah jalankan tugas dengan baik (Do your job well)," he added.

In Bangi, Najib said Malaysia welcomed the presence of Indonesian
parliamentarians, who were in the country to monitor Ops Tegas, which began
today. "We welcome their presence as long as they understand that we have a
responsibility to our country and its laws," he told reporters after launching
a national seminar on Islam Hadhari for university students.

It was reported yesterday that 12 Indonesian parliamentarians were in Malaysia
to monitor Ops Tegas.
