oggi sono un po' piu' "sveglio" e ho acceso anche il cervello:
usando redhat 7.2 ho sostituito in /etc/sysconfig/mouse :

MOUSETYPE="imps2"
...
XMOUSETYPE="IMPS/2"
su debian non ho ancora guardato ma mi pare che basti modificare
/etc/gpm.conf
