Just came across a couple of resource for finding open source alternatives to mainstream applications. This site is a database of proprietary software and brief reviews of available open source alternatives:

Also, there is a good list of apps on this blog:

Next week's Linux Play I want to talk about Software Freedom Day (Sept 15):
http://softwarefreedomday.org/

In the past a computer club based at Vic Uni have been the Poneke organising team for the SFD. There is no sign of them on the SFD teams list so far. It would be good to make contact with them, WellyLUG and LinuxChix to see how we can all work together to make the day a good promotion for free software.

Either way I'd like to do some stuff here at Oblong to support the SFD kaupapa. Some things we could do: - have an installfest at Oblong (this year's SFD falls on a Saturday, so Linux Play would be on anyway but we could do some special promotion) - distribute some posters/ flyers about SFD (and Linux Play/ Oblong/ our 'installfest') - put up a free software display on the walls at Oblong (where the Happy Valley display is now) - burn off copies of Ubuntu and theOpenCD with nice printed covers for free distribution on the day

Unfortunately I'm going to be away for the first couple of weeks of Sept due to a Massey Contact course and the anarchist conference and Partnership Forum protests in Orkland. However if you guys are willing to put in a bit of time and Oblong can put in some cash I think we can make some stuff happen.
