you should have a look at the grml distro (grml.org), which is a sysadmin type 
distro, with allsorts of handy utils, and also the Ultimate Boot CD (I think 
there's a copy in Oblong, but there's probabaly a new version out.) which has 
different hardware diagnostics and fixing stuffs.
