I am forwarding a copy of a letter sent to the LifeSaviors Ecocity Working Group (below). A final summation from the proposer is forthcoming shortly. Current status is that there are 6 persons subscribed: One from California, USA (me), one from Michigan, USA, One from Texas, USA, one from Phillipines, one from Sweden, one from Germany. There are two other private correspondants (Arizona & Washington), whom have elected to abstain currently from subscribing to the list. If anyone has hesitation because they feel that their email privacy will be compromised to spammers, see concatenated message below, which shows how email addresses are masked by the list software: TO and FROM fields are masked, but email addresses in body of text are not masked. As long as one does not sign the email with their email address in the body, then they are not going to have their email address published on the webpage archives. The small size of the current Working Group is sufficient to create a new public benefit corporation (in the USA called "nonprofit" corportation, in the rest of the world called a "NGO"). This will allow professional architects and engineers to donate services and receive a government benefit as a reduction of their income tax liability. This is not much incentive, but might be the critical small difference needed to elicite contributions where the present group lacks recognized governmental credibility and respect. The Working Group (or me, if it comes down to that) will assemble the background data the professional talent needs to prove their case. As in the ZERI pavillion at Expo 2000, it may be necessary to build a complete "Palace" structure in a corner of the planet where the governmental regulations are "lax", so as to prove their structural integrity for lands with over-regulated bueaurocracy which are intolerant of "new ideas" or deviations from existing norms. http://www.zeri.org/expo/pavilion.htm http://www.zeri.org/expo/pavilion_planning.htm http://bambus.rwth-aachen.de/eng/PDF-Files/ZERI%20Pavillion.pdf (Page 7 of 10) PLEASE: the above citations are NOT (repeat NOT) an endorsement of bamboo "Palaces", but they indicate the problem of introducing Buckminster Fuller's Octet Truss to "Do More With Less". Buckminster Fuller introduced the Octet Truss, which he called the isotropic vector matrix. http://www.grunch.net/synergetics/octet.html http://www.grunch.net/synergetics/ivm.html http://www.tabletoptelephone.com/~hopspage/Fuller.html http://reality.sculptors.com/~salsbury/Gifs/Graphics/octet-truss-003-v1.png Here are pictures of the Museum of Modern Art Fuller Octet Truss exhibit. http://www.synergeticsinc.com/bodytext/Moma.htm http://www.synergeticsinc.com/bodytext/exhibit.htm The OCTET TRUSS can significantly reduce the steel costs in a Palace structure, while improving its strength-to-weight ratio. However it increases the labor costs (which is not an issue where future residents participate in building their own Palace). Final Summary will be issued in several hours. Lion Kuntz is listowner, and Roberto Verzola suggested creation of the list some months ago. The list was never advertised, although it was intended to be opened for discussion of compact high-yield micro-farming. Without advertising the list, of course it never grew members. A series of messages was previously posted to the list to build up an archives and track record of the message topics suitable for discussion on the list. Many posts contain facts which are informative and contain links to more sources of similar data. EXPANSION of list topics: After 5 months of ECOCITY e-conference, it was decided by list owner to expand the scope of this pre-created list to carry over and include the food security topic matter, but also to incorporate two other distantly related concepts carried over from the ECOCITY discussions. These two concepts are (1) Palaces for the People, which are village-sized buildings of one hectare (one city block) in size, stuffed with ecological compatibility technologies, and, (2) Solar PV Breeder farms. If expansion of the lists warrants, each subject will be split off into its own list. Currently, each presently subscribed member is pre-approved to post messages without waiting for list moderator approval. Send messages as ordinary email to: lifesaviors@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Copies will be distributed to each subscriber automatically. If you want to invite associates you feel should participate in these discussions, send them the following information: --- clip and paste ------ Some important starter info: - To post on the mailing list, simply send email addressed to lifesaviors@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Persons not yet pre-approved must wait for moderator to forward post to list. - Users can subscribe to list by sending email to lifesaviors-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'subscribe' in the Subject field OR by logging into the Web interface. - Users can unsubscribe from list by sending email to lifesaviors-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field OR by logging into the Web interface. -------- end clip ------------ Key webpages: list web access page //www.freelists.org/cgi-bin/list?list_id=2447 introductory information (Eco-Syn) http://www.freewebz.com/microfarm/IBS_Flowchart/IBS_Flowchart_01.html Web archives of back messages //www.freelists.org/archives/lifesaviors/ A pictorial webpage selector for Ecosyn.us/ECOCITY http://www.ecosyn.us/Real_Work/ -------------------------------- This was proposed as a WORKING GROUP to further the discussion topics above into tangible reality. QUESTION: Can people make initial statements what they would like to help actualize, or is further detailed discussions necessary? QUESTION: Can people indicate a preliminary allotment of mental attention which they feel they can budget over the next period of time (say 30 to 90 days, hours per week, hours per month)? QUESTION: Can we produce a questionaire which can be put on the website, so that new can introduce themselves and indicate key information of what their special talents or contributions might be? Once this effort is moving we can refer to links to archived messages rather than extensive quoting. Does anybody have a problem with this methodology? Does anyone have any computer access limitations which might constrain their participation? enough for one message... ...
