A braille reader in Canada is seemingly plowing through the Harry Potter books
and has raised some questions about the translation of various names.
The most recent example is "Severus".
The liblouis UEB grade 2 table includes this override rule that prevents the
use of the "ever" sign:
sufword severus 234-15-1236-12456-136-234
This is apparently consistent with how Duxbury treats it, but I'm trying to
figure out why. Rule 10.7.4 (regarding the 'ever' contraction) includes the
name Severn as an example of when you would use "ever". Why are we not using
it for "Severus"?
My understanding is that the pronunciation of "Severus" is "Seh - ver - us",
with the stress on the first "e".
Is there some history to "Severus" that might explain this?
