Hmm, that definitely sounds like a bug to me, because the [] solution works
in other contexts, and it would be the logical way to do it.
Have you tried it in the middle of the string in stead of as the first
character?
I think we already have some other issue when testing for the first
character of a string, but I can't quite remember it now.

I am taking care not to replace the %englishLetter, but making an empty
bracket, I insert dots 56 immediately before.
