Hi Christian,
I run makeinfo 4.30.
It works fine with the manual that is in the last tarball (4.51).
The version on svn works fine with a4.13 version I have downloaded, so I'll
probably replace the 4.30 that comes with msys by this one.

What version of makeinfo do you have? I just did a new checkout and it
compiles fine here with makeinfo (GNU texinfo) 4.11.
I guess we need to put some stuff about what versions of which programs
you need into maybe README-hacking.
Hope that helps and yes, I also appreciate your efforts to try to get it
to compile on windows
