Isn't this what configure is for so people actually have the libraries they need. That is a good idea and I just now looked into it. Unfortunately I could not find an easy way to do this. It's easy to check for a program, but not so easy to check for a particular version without writing some M4. Maybe I'll just make a note in the NEWS file or in the release announcement.
