Thanks, Rich. I had never heard of the station before; but I had seen a dvd the
other day in an antique store in a community east of Tampa that was titled
“Radio Revolution - the Rise and Fall of the Big 8 / CKLW”, and I thought that
surely there would be someone in the group who had listened to the broadcasts.
By the text on the back of the dvd case it confirmed what you said about the
power of the broadcast signal, the musical format, and how it must’ve shook up
the radio station competition in the Detroit/Windsor metro area during the
1960s and 1970s. Being down the lake there in Cleveland it must’ve come in loud
and clear, constantly. :) Thanks for the confirmation, Rich.

There still is a radio station in Windsor, Ontario with the call letters
CKLW. It is a 50,000 watt clear channel station.
We youngsters in the Cleveland, Ohio area used to listen to it as much or
more than our local stations. In the sixties and '70's they played a lot of
"Motown" music. When they would identify their call letters the would say,
"CKLW, Detroit-Windsor". Now these days they are a distinctly Canadian
content station. No more Detroit- Windsor. I remember they had a newscaster
named Brian MacGregor. He had a distinctive voice and delivery.

That's pretty neat, Bill. Thank you. Which brings up two questions
still on the subject of radio, but perhaps a wee more closer to current
day. First, David, when you mentioned the gentleman, Mr. Rogers up there
in Canada, is he the patrich of the Rogers Broadcasting Network there in
Canada? Second, considering radio stations and the "skip" of the
transmissions does anyone remember a station broadcasting out of
Windsor, Ontario with the call letters "CKLW"?

the atmospherics were right, we could listen to Radio Havana, CMQ, on
our regular AM radios, there being no FM radios at that time. They
played very nice Cuban music.

stories. They brought back memories for me, too, with "old-time"
tube radios, though you both are far beyond me in your knowledge and
electronic capabilities. I just enjoyed listening to far away voices
and languages that I did not understand really really early in the
mornings down in Fort Myers up on the roof. My father had an old
Zenith Transoceanic "portable" that was maybe about 20 pounds in
weight and sized maybe a yard long in a black fabric covered case. I
would haul that thing out my bedroom window on to the roof, raise
that five or six foot antennae, flip the switch and the glow of the
multi-banded screen would give enough light to see the push-buttons
for the various bandwidths, and spend an hour or three tuning in
places, voices, and sounds that I did not know but enjoyed none the
less. That procedure lasted from age 7 until I was maybe thirteen
when upon moving the power switch there was "crackle" "pop" and an
increasing smell of something smoldering when the screen light did
not appear. It never did come back to life as I was told, "it's too
old to get parts forR Sure do miss sometimes that glowing screen
and the crackle of the speaker and the smile that hit me when I
found the time signature broadcast from, I think, Boulder, Colorado
announcing the "exact" time. Thanks for getting those memories back
up for me. :)
