Phil, You know, I only had trouble out of one R4 and it was a relatively early one. I sent it back to Leica on three different occasions for passport warranty service and they finally "jacked-up the base plate and put a new camera on it! I knew this because I put some small marks inside with a magic marker and they were gone when I got the body back the last time. After that it worked flawlessly until I loaned it to my brother-in-law who took it on a cruise to Bermuda. He dropped it overboard in the Atlantic while on a sightseeing junket and it went down to Davey Jones's locker, never to be seen again. Un fortunately, it had a 180, 3.4 APO attached to it at the time. He replaced it with an R5 & a 180, 3.4 APO so all was not lost. The R5 is still an excellent picture taker.
