I think that, in the second one, the dark background helps to emphazise the 
object of the picture, getting a result cleaner and more impressive.
Fine pictures, in any case.

  Had a bit of frost yesterday.  Put the old 100 APO on the Rebel and took a 
few shots.

   

  Which is better for these leaves?  There was some snow on the bushes behind

  I see the frost is a bit thicker this AM as the day is gradually getting
