[LRflex] What is "normal" revisited

Dear Flexers,

David's enumeration some time ago of "normal" focal lengths of
different formats made a light dawn for me and I hereby thank him.

The blinding glimpse of the obvious was that the "normal" focal
length for the DMR was about 36 mm; I certainly knew that but I did
not realize what it meant to me as a practical matter.

In contrast to David, who said he "sees" long, I tend to "see" normal
or shorter. So the DMR meant that I had lost the "wider than normal"
capability that I had carried with me for twenty years using 35-70 mm
zooms and film, where 50 mm was "normal."

The fix? Since I plan to use this rig for a long time, I traded my
35-70 f/4 V-E zoom for a used (naturally) V-E 28-90 zoom to use as my
walking-around-lens and now my intuition about framing has been
restored, with my customary range of shorter and longer lenses around
the 35/36 mm "normal" once again available to me.

The change in comfort for me has been dramatic; happy days are here
again. Now to make my pocketbook happy!

As ever,

Bill
