Perhaps not quite as good as the APO-R extender, but I suspect it would give you a better image, than simply cropping the original file, as you have. Another alternative is a 1.4 extender. Not as strong, but not as much image degradation, nor as much light loss. That, and some (but a lesser amount of) cropping, might give you the same result, with better image quality. Extenders, while not the perfect solution, in any case, are a great idea for the traveler. Both compact and light. Just thoughts... Cheers!
