We first met Harpdog (yes, that's the name he goes by) Brown about a decade ago
and we've become good friends.
Since then, he's moved up from touring the western Canada Blues Circuit to
touring throughout Canada and much of the US.
Along the way, he's won Canada's "Maple Blues" award for "Harmonica Player of
the Year", three years running.
But shooting a harmonica player is always a tough job ... no visible smiles, no
great action. But, Shooting at "The Barn Stage" (10:40 to 12pm); at this
year's Roots & Blues Festival in Salmon Arm. BC (who knew salmon had arms?),
presented a tough challenge, as the stage lighting was horrible and the stage
was impossible to get near.
I'd have been happier to use my 75/1.8 Zuiko, but I ended up shooting from the
back of the room, with the Pana-Leica 100-400 zoom at roughly f5.6 to f6.3,
which meant boosting the ISO to 3200, with it's resultant loss of quality.
Combine that with hand-holding a lens at 360+mm (monopods were not allowed),
and shooting around 1/125th; and you can begin to see that Forest Fire smoke
was not the only problem!
Given the conditions, I'm pretty happy with the results.
