This past Monday two great photographers passed. The most famous of the
pair was Robert Frank who I believe was born in Switzerland. He is most
famous for his gritty book "The Americans" a collection of photos that
he took when he was relatively new to N. America. He grew weary of
N.Y.C. and settled in Nova Scotia. Fred Herzog I believe was born in
Germany and settled in Vancouver B.C.. He worked for a local university
and took photos around the city in his spare time of what ever caught
his fancy. He used Kodachrome film because he could not afford to have
prints made. He was "discovered" around 1976. He only had one book of
his photos printed. Digital
prints from his slides enabled his work to be printed. Some one pointed
out in a recent article about them that they died on opposite sides of
Canada on the same day. Fred Herzog's obituary is online from The
Vancouver Sun. Robert Frank was 95 years old and Fred Herzog was 88.
