hi,

I am still trying to fully understand Leica R lenses on the Nikon D700
Howard...

I am finally convinced that IF the R10 ever appears, and even if it
is technically up to snuff, it will, more than likely, be way too
expensive for me...

Hi Steve,
I am much of the same mind - especially with what is happening in world wide financial markets and I am a retired chap already. :-( So, logically what can we do if we want to use our old R lenses which we have held on to hoping for a reliable and affordable R10?
Some background:
I have gone the Canon route (60D, D20, D1MkII, and 5D) and the Oly 330E and E3 route with varying degrees of satisfaction using my R lenses via adapters - some with focusing chips and some without. The Oly platforms, especially the E3, suited my photo style better

thanks Howard,

for me the Canon 20D and 5D and the Oly E3

than the Canon platforms. I drifted away to Nikons (which I had started with as film cameras in 1970 with a Nikkormat) with the D200, D300
and now D700.
For my taste, I MUCH prefer the Nikons over the Canons - especially the D700 with its amazing low noise high ISO capability and the ability to set Auto ISO and then
fix slowest shutter speed. (This is important for a later comment).
With this background I will go on to your questions.
sooooo.... forgive me for possibly, beating several dead horses...

the R lens Nikon D 700..conversions work out OK, easy or not too
difficult in most cases?

In my experience - three lenses converted to date with two to go - the bayonet conversions are very easy. I started with the 90 Summicron, following the directions on the Leitax site (ain't the internet wonderful?) and the change was done in about 10 minutes. Then I went on to the 180 Telyt APO, and followed the directions. I had to remove the light baffle separately from the directions on the website but other than that it was easy. My last conversion - the 19 Elmarit version 1 (version 2 strikes the mirror on both the D700 and the Canon 5D) - was not illustrated but I followed the example of the 21mm on the website. The only mistake I made was to remove the third cam which I didn't need to do. The sample now up on the Leitax site of changing the bayonet on the 19 Elmarit is my experience - I passed the photos on to David Lladro and he put them up.

I would do the Slux 80mm 1.4 likely first, also then the 90 cron and the Elm 19 generation 1...

I have two ROM lenses to change: the 28mm Elmarit and the 100 Macro APO. I am waiting for someone else to do these and then I will go ahead. And, for the lenses which I have all these conversions are completely reversible. Each Leica bayonet and cams and shims are in a baggy marked with the lens name and put safely away.

auto light monitoring regardless of f stop works OK ?
Absolutely no problem. As f stops close down shutter speeds adjust in a linear fashion. There is none of the exposure skewing that I got with the Canons (except the 1D MkII). The deal here is to set auto ISO to a max of 6400 (which is basically grainless in reasonable light), fix the minimum shutter speed at 1/200 for all lenses, which covers my old age tremors even for the 180 APO, and then fix the lens at the intermediate f stop that you want to shoot at.

manual focus easy comfortable, the view finder is easy to work with?

To continue what I am saying above - the viewfinder is usable (for my eyes and I am at the trifocal stage of life) to f5.6 or f8.0 in reasonably bright light levels. If you can't make focus then you open up, of course, but in the meantime the camera is keeping the shutter at at least 1/200 and lifting the ISO as light requires. It is really an elegant way of exposing photos that does not intrude on your making photos. I hope Leica does the same in the R10 even if I don't buy one!

that sounds fine...I can do that with my eyes and I can hold OK with most (short) lenses even at slower speeds...

focus confirmation, by sound ?

I don't use sound focus confirmation on the D700 usually but I just went and turned it on and put the 19 Elmarit on and you get focus confirmation visually in the viewfinder but no sound confirmation.

that's interesting...I'd like to know if anything changes, or if you get sound with other lenses...

thanks so much Howard,

Steve

I may have some further questions later...

Please ask away - I will be pleased to answer if I know or can find out by testing the camera and lenses. I am presently in Bali and have taken the 19 Elmarit and 180 Telyt with me and I am having a blast. I didn't bring the 90 Cron because I am using the 24 - 70 f2.8 as the fill in between the 19 and the 180. The Nikon zoom is first rate too.

and thanks so much to Howard and others who have some experience...

My pleasure, replies may be a bit slow due to the intermittent nature of the internet here.
Cheers
Howard

Steve
