I have yet to try that feature on my camera.  It seems to implemented in a very confusing way if you are use to doing it manually.  I would much rather it have you focus on the closest point then the furthest point then it could suggest how many frames you need for that distance and f-stop which you could then modify if you want and then shoot away.  I still stick to doing it  manually.  Maybe one day I will give the in camera feature a try.  But I do use the Leica 100 APO for serious close up work and that would not work with the in-camera feature.

Hello Aram,
Thanks. I did just clicked on AF tab on the screen and then scrolled down to number of shots I want to take and then clicked enable on photo stacking. Yes, I did focus on the nearest part of the orchid to the lens and rest was automatic when I clicked enable on photo stacking. I did have 2 sec timer so there is No vibration. Auto focus. I also turned off so called VR mode on the lens.

f 5 or even f-8 is a good place to be unless it allows the background to be too much in focus.  This puts the lens at its maximum sharpness and the slices are not too thin.  I am not sure there is any easy way to figure out how many images to take.  Depth of field is subjective as well as objective.  Of course, the close you are or the wider open your lens is there is less DOF so more slices would be required.  On the other hand, as I said, if you stop down too much the background is more distracting and the lens is less sharp but you would need less slices.  In reality, at any f-stop there is only one thin plane that is actually in focus and the rest, closer and further away, fades off in a predictable fashion (see depth of field tables) but the circle of confusion that is acceptable to you is subjective and also depends on how you will view the image.

All that said, I just take a lot of shots, look at them, then decide how may I will need.  And exposure is the same on all of them, so you can develop them all the same before stacking.  Lightroom batch processing works well for that.

What I learned from experimenting was that if my aperture is 2.8 instead of 5.0 then number of photos should be more. I do not know the ratio though between aperture and number of photos. I will keep doing some further experimentation and let you know.
There were no variations in exposure in all the 10 photos.

A nice looking experimental image, Vipul.

As I wrote a while back with Aram’s stacking image I know nothing of the process yet, so, does the large quantity of images enhance the final image in your eyes over fewer images in a “stack”; and are there any variations in exposure between the 10 images?

Best regards,
