Photokina: Panasonic bows 2 Leica DSLR lenses

Panasonic today unveiled two Leica interchangeable lenses designed =20
for both digital SLRs put out by the two companies. The lenses are a =20
Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-50mm f/2.8-3.5 lens (35mm equivalent: =20
28-100mm) and a 25mm f/1.4 lens (35mm equivalent: 50mm).

Earlier this year, Panasonic announced Lumix DMC-L1 as its first =20
digital SLR. Two weeks ago, Leica's unveiled the Digilux 3 DSLR. The =20
two companies have been sharing technologies since earlier this year, =20=

and both cameras use the same mount and follow the four-thirds =20
imaging sensor standard.

The Leica 14-50mm f/2.8-3.5 ASPH lens has 16 lens elements in 12 =20
groups, and incorporates Panasonic's Mega O.I.S. (Optical Image =20
Stabilization) technology. Since the optics meet Leica's high optical =20=

performance standards, the image is said to be clear from corner to =20
corner across the entire zoom range with minimal distortion. The =20
diaphragm blades are rounded, producing the smooth out-of-focus =20
quality that Leica lenses are known for. The minimum aperture is f/22.

The Leica D Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH lens is a wide-aperture normal =20
lens that is claimed to produce minimal distortion and high =20
resolution.ED and Super ED lens element are said to suppress =20
chromatic aberration, thus minimizing color bleeding. The lens can =20
focus down to 15 inches, which is unusually close for a normal lens.

Pricing and availability have not been announced yet.
