Further to my last post, if seeing and/or photographing the Eclipse of 21
August, 2017 interests you, there are a few things to know.
First of all, it runs from Salem, Oregon (duration 2min, 0 sec.) though
Missouri, (duration 2:40 near Lick Creek on I-57) and leaves the US just north
of Charleston, SC (duration: 2:32).
You choose your viewing point based on how far your willing to travel, for how
many extra seconds of totality that you might see and on the forecast weather
for that spot. For, if you're clouded out, you'll see nothing but the sky get
dark and then light again. Of course, if you're far from home, part of where
you view will be based on where you can find accommodations.
Go to:
http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2017Aug21Tgoogle.html
and click on the "large map" box at the lower right of the map. This will give
you a full screen map, with the centerline and limits of totality shown. Click
on any spot in the map and it will give you GPS coordinates and the duration of
the eclipse at that spot.
It makes travel planning MUCH easier!
A partial eclipse will be visible from all of North America through to the
northern bits of South America.
Wherever you watch it from, you will need proper eye protection, when watching,
and proper filtration for your camera (an ND filter is NOT good enough!). If
you point your camera at the sun with a long lens, but without a proper
filter, the heat concentrated by your lens will most likely crack the
pentaprism. I've seen it happen. You have been warned.
I'll post more on that, soon.
When I was in La Paz, BCS, Mexico, in 1991, for "the big one" (with a duration
of 6 min. 50 seconds) I met a woman who ran an English-language school. I
asked her if she was going to watch the eclipse, to which she replied: "Oh
yes! I'm going to watch it in the time-honoured Mexican way..... from under
the bed!"
