I have done that and there is a difference.  Right off the bat the difference is evident in that the jpeg has been processed already by the camera and the raw file has not other than when you convert it to B&W if you convert it flat.

Now, if you process both, depending on the photo, the raw can look quite a bit better.  This is true especially if there is a wide dynamic range that the raw file can handle better with manipulation.    The shadows and highlights have more detail in them.  If there is not much dynamic range then the difference is less.

B&W, so the jpeg looks better.

And incidentally, the photo looks great.  You did a great job in the conversion.

Thanks, Vipul.

Have you had the time and inclination to compare side-by-side the B&W images - the
JPEG from the Camera and then JPEG that you created from your software editor? I have
never thought to try it until now, and since you’ve been looking at and working with
B&W consistently now for a while I figured if there was a difference, for better or
worse, that your experienced “eye” would pick up any differences.

Hello Peter,
I took the photo with black and white jpeg on screen of the rangefinder and
also have Raw file along with it. I then converted Raw file in to black and
white in PS and downloaded to flicker in JPEG.

Very nice, Vipul. Did you make the B&W capture in the Camera as a JPEG or later in your editing software?

Best regards,

Rain was about to fall and slight  peeping of light through very dark clouds in
