Steve,

Back in the 1950s it was not uncommon for us serving in US Navy ships to
occasionally welcome a recruit onboard fresh from Boot Camp who had never used
a telephone and did not know how to use one.

At that time all the major combatants—battleships, cruisers and aircraft
carriers—all had rotary dial telephone systems on board that connected the
major stations and offices, so telephony was an important fact of everyday
life. The number for the Bridge of every ship was 222.

Sometimes we received boots who had never seen a dentist in their whole lives,
young men from very deprived circumstances.

Some things seem to never change.

Best,

Bill
