Just for fun, Peter, this morning I tried exactly the same process, just as the
sun came up. Again, I had great difficulty even seeing "Bear" in the finder.
But, this time, I tried ISO 25,600 - the upper limit of the camera. Thus
resulted in an exposure of 1/30th @ f5.6. Focal length was 138mm and again, it
was hand held. Processing was identical to before.
The results, to be fair, were lousy. In fact, calling them lousy, is being
kind. Very kind.
So, Topaz Sharpen-AI & deNoise-AI are terrific bits of software, but even they
have their limits.
If I may, I'll sum up by quoting from Wayne & Shuster's "A Shakespearean
Baseball Game" .

You cannot win them all."

Holy smokes! David, considering the parameters that you set out I
agree with you completely. "Bear"'s portrait is very impressive,
indeed. If you had not mentioned the ISO value used, the other
settings, and your process I would not have known anything being
out of the ordinary, other than I would've detected just a hint of
noise in Bear's brown fur. Otherwise, I would not have been able to
say that you used such a high ISO value and the other extreme
settings. Well done, sir.
On another note - thanks very much for the link to the article from
August on the wine taint in the Okanagan. That was enlightening.

Topaz deNoise-AI has just had what they term as a "major update",
so I installed it.
This morning, in the pre-dawn light, I decided (spur of the
moment) to do a quick and dirty test.
Micro-Four Thirds cameras have many advantages, including
smaller, lighter bodies and lenses as well as that in-built 2x
crop-factor, which is a HUGE advantage, for wildlife work.
Where they suffer, is with high ISO settings. Smaller pixels
mean fewer photons, which equals more amplification, which means
more noise. It's a fact of life.
I'll match it's performance at ISO 400 against any camera out
there. But, faster? Not so much.
So, I try never to use the camera above ISO 800 and, even then,
as little as I can.
"Bear" has been with us since before memory and recently appeared
on a "new to us" chair which I will soon refinish.
I used my new 100~400 Olympus zoom, hand-held in so little light
that I could barely see Bear in the viewfinder- even though he's
sitting next to a large window.
Exposure was 1/15th, f6,3 with an ISO setting of 16,000. Hand-
held. (I was asking a lot!)
I developed the shot in RawTherapee, with minimal adjustments. I
then ran it through Topaz' Sharpen-AI as it also includes an
ability to correct a bit of for motion blur.
Then I ran it through Topaz' deNoise.

It's not perfect as the whites could have been better tweaked
during development, but this was a Q&D test and I'm impressed.
