Thank you for the lead.
I have two daguerreotypes from my mother’s family in the 1800s, including one
of my great-grandmother, and images of other family members which were copied
from the originals by a cousin of mine.
I have always wondered how they came to be and now I know.

Back in 2012, George Eastman House made a 6 part video series on photographic
processes used throughout history. The short educational videos run about 3-6
minutes each, and provide a great look into the various ways photographers of
old created their images.
Although now some 7 years old, it was only though a post on PetaPixel that
I've just learned of them.
