Our friend's place is in rural Snohomish. First you go north to Everett,
then east across a swamp to the town of Snohomish. Then you literally
go "over the river and through the woods," and waaaay up in the hills.
I don't know the exact altitude, but their weather is distinctly cooler
than in the Puget Sound lowlands. Cold enough to just keep a thin layer
of ice on the pond, which crystallized in fascinating ways.
In my suburb, just north of the Seattle city limits, it's been just
below freezing the last couple of nights. As I write this, it is 28 F,
so it will get at least a degree colder if not 2. My old furnace's pilot
light has gone out twice due to demand lowering the gas pressure at just
the wrong moment. We can get quite cold here if interior air blows down
the Fraser River valley and heads down towards us. So David, please
keep yer cold air masses to yourself! :-)
On the bright side, it's been beautifully sunny during the day, and (for
an urban area) lots of stars visible at night. Orion was showing off his
belt when I went out to check on the heat tape on the garden hose spigots.

I agree with David, Peter, that’s an interesting image. Reminds meof a palm
thicket that I saw last week in the back acres of the swamp in thelocal state
park - there had to be six or seven different varieites of palms withdifferent
frawns over lapping each other like all the angles of the ice in yourimage.
