Doug, funny you should say "Some were really more equal than others" about East Berliners. I took a tour bus at Checkpoint Charley that ended up at a special duty free type store where Western luxury goods were sold for hard currencies. I offered to buy the tour leader a carton of Marlboros which was usually unavailable to her. She became nervous and whispered she could get into a lot of trouble for that. Shortly after, two East Berlin cops walked in and began stuffing their jackets and bags with cartons of Marlboros and stalked out without paying. My guide said, "In socialism everyone is equal, but some are more equal than others". I left a carton on the bus.
