When a calf-roper ropes his calf, he must then get off his horse, catch the
calf and tie three of it's legs so that it can be branded. (The branding bit
is left out of the rodeo version.)
The youngsters do "break-away roping", in which they must rope their calf, and
then bring their horse to a quick stop. The calf continues to run until the
rope is taught and it breaks a thread that was tying it to the saddle horn.
Lowest total time from the release of the calf, to the rope breaking-away (as
seen by it's coloured ribbon becoming visible to all), wins.
However, when your young, and have never it before ... it can bring on some
considerable anxiety.
