Whoa! That's a pretty freaky looking item, David. The closest thing that I've
seen down here in the rural areas of central Florida is a hornet's nest; but
they don't have the long entrance tube feature. The body of the nest looks
pretty close to our hornet nests, only ours can reach much larger dimensions of
length and diameter and are a darker color. It'll be fun to hear/read what the
other "Flexers" postulate. :)

Yesterday, I removed the old, rotting, decking from our upper, back deck, and
found this nest,on the bottom of one of the pieces of ply.
I've seen lots of bee/wasp nests, over the years, but never one with a long
"snout", like this one.
As it was unoccupied, can anyone tell me what kind of beast used to live in it?
Not a great photo ... just a snapshot to document the nest.
Bear in mind that this is upside down, as I'd turned over the board.
