Guys, gals.... It's worth listening to Ted. His is the voice of experience
and Ted knows whereof he speaks.
Some years ago, when I was first asked to photograph a group of Chinese VIP's
visiting our local copper mine, I phoned Ted to ask what I should do, as I'd
never done that particular style of photography.
His easy answer? "Shoot everything they see, and shoot them looking at it."
It was simple advice, but perfect. The mine managers were delighted with the
results and have hired me for every VIP tour, since!
As for being the Mute Mutt and invisible... He is spot on, with that, too. In
many, many situations. Just blend into the background.

A pile of things to be learned from these wonderful photojournalist photo
moments by Pete Souza!
A PHOTOJOURNALIST EXTRAORDANAIRE! He is!
How see theme:
1/ If you can see it? You can shoot it! NO FLASH!! And that's one of the key
elements while in the company of the PRESIDENT. Or in my case? "The Canadian
Prime Ministers." Or other's in society of His or Her level.
2/ Rarely pose images unless they look casual and un-posed. Unless the
BOSS-MAN requests it! Even then make them look relaxed and not all gawking in
the camera!
3/You see the moment, "CLICK!" With little or no thoughts about making it
better simply because you will already be in the correct "YOU SHOULD BE IN
THE BEST SHOOT POSITION BEFORE IT HAPPENS! OR YOU SHOULD BE!"
4/ Don't get all techie about light balance and fiddling with your gear!!
Because it's digital and the computer can do wonders. And if you are camera
fiddling? Sure as hell you will miss a beautiful unrehearsed moment.
5/Just keep your camera in hands ready to shoot. As you see the moment it's
camera to eye CLICK before it disappears.
Remember you are a "special SILENT guest" in these situations so keep your
"MOUTH SHUT" unless you're spoken to and a response is expected. Otherwise
you are a MUTE MUTT and INVISABLE!"
6/Be polite at all times, read the situations so you know "IT'S TIME FOR ME
TO NIP OUT THE DOOR!" Before they tell you! If you have to be told when to
get out because you don't pick-up "face message" glances and you are being
told too often to get out?" You'll very quickly become the "OUT HOUSE"
PHOTOG! Behind the barn! L
That's a rough outline, but in most cases "COMMON SENSE" will guide you
through it until you learn to read the "BOSS-MAN'S EXPRESSIONS" when he looks
at you.
7/ One last thing!:-( YOU CAN NOT GO TO BED OR ANYWHERE UNTIL THE ''boss man
has gone to bed!" THAT'S JUST IN CASE A PICTURE MOMENT MAY COME UP AND THE
BOSS-MAN WANTS A "HAPPY SNAP!" taken. L Worst part of that is??? You have to
leave your relaxing Scotch after a "rough day!!" Oh so many times!!!! L L

Pete Souza and his staff have photographed President Obama for the last 8
years.
Being the personal photographer for a national leader requires not only
photographic skill, but a huge dedication, a tremendous investment of hours
and the ability to disappear while documenting the events of the day. (Dr.
Ted may want to weigh in on this, as he has considerable experience
photographing Canadian Prime Ministers John Deifenbaker and Joe Clark.)
This year, as in every of the last 8 years, Souza has posted what he feels
are the best moments of 2016.
While there are some historic moments covered, most of the shots are of the
man and his family. I'm not sure whether you'd call it documentary
photography or photojournalism ... to me some of the images blur the lines.
But, the photography is excellent, and worth a look, no matter what your
political persuasion. Look, and learn.
