It's those eyes...

The look haunted me when I took the picture. Swimming along as you watch, then disappearing when you turn away for the briefest instant and remaining out of sight for what seems like minutes - that's what grebes do. Their eyes make them look like chronic AA attendees and they're always swiveling heads back and forth watching for predators or other swimming companions before they dive. This guy seemed to stare right through me:
