Did anyone mention dust or particles on the sensor itself? I have seen this on a friend's Cannon (30D?). CHEERS! This also makes sense.... on the Eiffel Tower, Rose was less than 2 meters away... same with my shots, today. Both made with the 80~200 Vario. Still, there must be something about the light (angle, intensity, whatever) as well, for until today, only a few shots (in the close focus range) have suffered this problem, though many did this afternoon. Prior to today, it has been a rare occurrence. But it's still not consistent! Thanks for your input, Slobodan!
