All,
Sheri Anderson and I had a great day exploring some of the hotspots in our CBC
section yesterday, 12/11/2020. Highlights include:
Clapp/Arboretum:
1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet
1 American Goldfinch
1 Green-winged Teal
1 Yellow-rumped Warbler (Do numbers seem especially low this year for this
species?)
Area around the new YMCA building, formerly Kmart (no water present)
Sheri spotted an Orange-crowned Warbler in a tree right in front of us.
1 Northern Flicker was also there.
Casey Park
13 Hooded Mergansers
3 American Wigeons
1 Pied Billed Grebe
1 Kingfisher
1 Double-crested Cormorant
1 Greater Yellowlegs
Ash Avenue urban lake, north (I27 & & 289s)
A welcomed surprise: Beautiful views of an Osprey soaring above us. Manuel and
Glenda, you two have the urban lake directly south of here. Maybe it will show
up on CBC day.
6 Greater White-fronted Geese flew over us with no signs of stopping or landing
nearby.
1 Kestrel
8 Ruddy Ducks
1 Ferruginous Hawk
Urban lakes at E. 50th St & Ave A
Sheri spotted a Downy Woodpecker doing its thing in the trees.
1 Great-horned Owl
9 Hooded Mergansers
1 Kingfisher
During the course of the morning, 124 Sandhill Cranes flew over us and Sheri
found a roadside Curve-billed Thrasher. There were also several Mockingbirds,
Cardinals, Blue Jays, Juncos, Robins, Doves, Grackles, and not to mention the
numerous geese everywhere. We are all going to have a fun time counting Canada
and Cackling Geese!
Sheri - thank you for such a great day!
Anthony - I'm curious about the high count is for Canada and Cackling geese for
the Lubbock CBC area?
