Sending out a plea for more people to sign up, especially some of you newer
birders, bashful birders, and lady birders. As much as I've enjoyed and
appreciated the opportunity birding with most of the people listed below, I
know there are many more of you out there who we haven't met yet.
Please don't hesitate to sign up. It's OK to make mistakes (I made Jennifer
Miller drive across town to see a "rare bird" that ended up being a Robin, and
she still talks to me). It's OK to miss things (distractions happen). It's even
ok to fall in the mud (someone might laugh at you, though).
As long as you can see reasonably well, hear reasonably well, move around
reasonably well, and count to 100, your skills are needed, regardless of
expertise.

Subject: [leasbirds] Lubbock Area Christmas Bird Counts - Second Announcement
The Lubbock County CBC will be held on Saturday, 14 December 2019.
Teams will meet with their team leaders at locations selected by the
team leaders by 7:30 AM, we will count until 5:00 PM, and a potluck
dinner and countdown will be held at the compiler's house at 5:00 PM
with the countdown to start at 6:00 PM. The count circle is divided
into eight areas and, ideally, I would have 24 participants: eight
leaders and two additional counters per team. So far I have:
Area One - Ransom Lake and environs - VACANT
Area Two - V8 Ranch, Buffalos Springs Lake and environs - Drew Harvey
Area Three - City Farms and environs - Anthony Hewetson, Lena Zappia
Area Four - Southern edge Jeremy Clark
Area Five - Northwest corner - Bobby Schat
Area Six - Canyon Lakes - Phillip Kite, Cinda Crosley, Rob Lee (PM only)
Area Seven - East Lubbock parks and playas - William Wenthe, Jamie Court
Area Eight - West Lubbock parks and playas - Jim Crites, Barry Keith
The Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge CBC will be held on Sunday, 15
December 2019. We will meet at the refuge residence at 7:30 AM, bird
until 11:30 AM (the count is refuge-restricted and doesn't take as
long as most CBCs), and then meet back at the residence for a potluck
lunch and countdown at noon. The circle is divided into five areas
and, ideally, I would have five team leaders and ten additional
counters. So far I have:
Area One - Paul's Lake - Anthony Hewetson, Lena Zappia
Area Two - Headquarters and White Lakes - Jim Crites, Cinda Crosley, Barry Keith
Area Three - Goose Lakes - Drew Harvey, Jamie Court, Jeremy Clark
Area Four - Northern Highlands - Rob Lee, Phillip Kite
The White River Lake CBC will be held on Saturday, 28 December 2019.
We will meet at the White River Lake Marina at 7:30 AM, bird until
4:30 PM or so, and then meet up for supper and a countdown at a yet to
be determined location (some years the marina restaurant stays open
long enough; some years we travel back to Lubbock for a potluck). The
circle is divided into five routes and, ideally, I hope to gather
together five team leaders and ten additional counters. So far I have:
Area One - Eastern region - Anthony Hewetson, Lena Zappia
Area Two - The Great North Woods - Rich Kostecke, Brandon Best
Area Three - East side of the lake - Phillip Kite, Jeremy Clark
Area Four - West side of the lake - Rob Lee, Drew Harvey, Barry Keith
Area Five - South and west - Jim Crites, Manuel De Leon
Conditions have been pretty good in the region this year and, looking
at long-range forecasts, we anticipate a pretty good CBC season. I do
my best to assure that every route has some habitat diversity and, in
my opinion, the potluck/countdown system is a lot of fun with people
getting a chance to visit with seldom-seen friends and to meet new
birding enthusiasts.
