Lubbock received 5.97 inches of rain during September, well above the
average September total of 2.57 inches, putting us at 21.56 inches for
the year, well above the average year-to-date total of 15.60 inches.
It is nice to see so much moisture about and we certainly saw a good
pickup of bird sightings, across taxa, during September. If
conditions continue mild and wet for a few more weeks, I predict a
very good Christmas Bird Count season.

LM, NP, BS) - DECENT ENOUGH SCATTER BUT LOW NUMBERS.
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER: 3 at the Plainview Apartments Playa (Hale) on
9/14/19 (NP) the first of the season – RIGHT ON TIME BUT LOW NUMBERS
EVEN AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.
TOWNSEND’S WARBLER: 3 at Muleshoe NWR (Bailey) on 9/9/19 (SG) and 1 in
a Lubbock yard (Lubbock) on 9/9/19 (DH) – ABOUT AVERAGE.
BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER: 1 at Cochran County Park (Cochran) on
9/1/19 (GC) and 1 at Clapp Park (Lubbock) on 9/11/19 (JCr, DH, JM) –
PRETTY GOOD NUMBERS FOR THIS RELATIVELY RARE VISITOR TO OUR REGION.
WILSON’S WARBLER: Twenty-seven reports of 1-9 birds, one report of 12
birds, and one report of 17 birds in the region (Bailey, Hale,
Hockley, Lubbock, Terry, Yoakum) during the period (GB, JoC, JCo, JCr,
SG, DH, PKi, JK, LM, JM, NP, BS) – THE ONLY MIGRANT THAT WAS EVEN
CLOSE TO GOOD NUMBERS AND GOOD SCATTER THIS YEAR.
WESTERN TANAGER: 2 at the Sundown Golf Course (Hockley) on 9/9/19 (SG)
and 4 at Coleman Park (Terry) on 9/10/19 (SG) the only reports – GOOD
NUMBERS BUT ODDLY CONCENTRATED.
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK: 1 in a Lubbock yard (Lubbock) on 9/26/19 (JCr)
the only report – A TAD LOW.
BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK: 2 at Coleman Park (Terry) on 9/10/19 (SG) and 1
at Clapp Park (Lubbock) on 9/30/19 (JCr) the only reports – A TAD LOW.
INDIGO BUNTING: 1 at Clapp Park on 9/11/19 (JoC) and 1 at Clapp Park
(Lubbock) on 9/14/19 (BS) – A RATHER POOR SHOW FOR THIS GENERALLY MORE
COMMON MIGRANT.
