Hi,
This afternoon I had a hankering to see some Snipe, so I went to the spot
that Sheri mentioned in her earlier email. I parked and right in front of me
was a Wilson's snipe feeding in plain sight in a large puddly spot. I had a
great close-up observation of it.
There was also a very handsome Bonaparte's Gull right there, at the upper,
narrow end of the lake, feeding its tern-like way. This too was a relatively
closeup view of the bird in action.
In between, as I stepped toward a spot where something like a marsh wren
flew, I inadvertently flushed four more snipe. Or, I flushed one and it
flushed the others. I felt bad; but they only flew a couple dozen yards,
dropping down again in the same crescent of marshy area between the parking
lot and the main road.
Speaking of snipe, I remember many years ago there were about 20 or so
feeding on the long concrete slope of the Buffalo Springs Lake dam. Right
out in the open. Some remarkable snipe watching. I wonder if we might see
some of that again.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Bill
