Hello forum
Being brave here and asking the forum a (stupid) question 😊 - I will try and
word as simply as I can (if even to make it clear for myself)
Background to question first:
In my interpretation of LCT Autonomy (from its Maton 2005 early propositions)
and its extension from Bourdieu, I have (probably incorrectly) come to the
conclusion that Bourdieu’s positions and position takings are more effectively
analysed in terms of positional autonomy (for positions) and relational
autonomy (for position takings)? In this way LCT allows for the 4 modalities
of these combinations to be seen and not result in conflation (i.e. the
sociological reductionism argument or where dominant positions are conflated
with dominant stances/positiontakings and dominated positions with radical
positiontakings).
I believe relational autonomy (RA) addresses both autonomous principles, i.e.
position takings and heteronomous principles (position takings) and these are
largely driven by the nature of capitals in the field creating autonomous and
heteronomous poles.
My question is:
Does positional autonomy (PA) address autonomous positions and heteronomous
positions (essentially inside and outside the field or levels of external
(heteronomous) influence on actors within the field (considering refraction
etc)?) or do these ideas of autonomous and heteronomous ‘positions’ not exist?
Can I essentially simplify to the below:
Positional autonomy
Autonomous positions
Heteronomous positions
Relational autonomy
Autonomous positiontakings (principles)
Heteronomous positiontakings (principles)
No doubt I have over-simplified the relationships (and I understand it depends
somewhat on what your target is)….but I was just trying to go back to answering
the question about why I am using LCT so have incorporated much of Maton 2005
in doing this to justify the move from Bourdieu to LCT (as looking at other
PHDs I see Bourdieu tends to be used to see the ‘field’ and set the object of
study – so I have followed that approach)
Any thoughts welcomed 😊
